Winter Activities
Deep Creek Lake is like a winter wonderland during this time of year…with an average of 110 inches of snowfall
the area is transformed by Mother Nature into a little Switzerland.
Hiking and Cross Country Skiing
Both hiking and cross country skiing allow you to enjoy this season firsthand. The state parks offer miles of
hiking trails for everyone including cross country skiing enthusiasts. Six miles of maintained trails and
primitive trails are available at Herrington Manor. Deep Creek and Swallow Falls State Parks also provide marked
hiking trails which can be used by cross-country skiers. New Germany provides cleared and maintained trails as
well as a snow cleared parking lot.
Winter Events
The annual Kick and Glide Cross Country Ski Race takes place at Herrington Manor State Park in January and
other races are held in Febuary at New Germany State Park. Rentals are available at local sports stores.
Skiing
Downhill skiing and snow boarding is available at Wisp Ski Resort. Wisp features the largest snowboarding half
pipe on the East Coast and has created a snow tubing run which is great fun for the kids.
Cross country skiing, ice fishing, and snowmobiling are also popular winter activities in the Deep Creek area.
Memory Cove is located approximately 15 miles from the Wisp Ski Resort which features:
- Elevation Vertical drop 610 ft, 2470 ft at base, 3080 average snowfall
- Snowfall 96" average annual snowfall
- Slope difficulty 20% beginner, 50% intermediate, 30% advanced
- Trail system 23 slopes and trails totaling 14 miles on 80 acres of skiable terrain-90% of which are lighted for night skiing!

- Uphill capacity Total uphill capacity of 9102 skiers per hour
- Snowmaking Snowmaking operations at Wisp, with computerized weather and pumping stations is world reknown for its efficiency! 90% of all skiable terrain is equiped for snowmaking as well as for night skiing.
Ice Fishing
If you're a hardcore fisherman, January and Febuary is your time to take your skills to the ice! Over the years,
ice fishing has become more popular on Deep Creek Lake. Many species are willing to take your offering at this time
of year including: Yellow perch, walleye, northern perch and trout. Be sure to check with one of the local fishing
shops on ice conditions and locations before you venture out!
Snowmobiling
Snowmobiling is an thrilling and fast-paced winter sport at Deep Creek Lake. With the average area snowfall each
year of 110 inches, Deep Creek is an ideal are for this sport. Over 35 miles of trails are available in the state
forests. Snowmobile tours are available at various state parks in January and Febuary. Please contact any Maryland
State Park for permits and regulations.
During the winter months, most retreat to Deep Creek to experience the peace and serenity of this time of year.
Just curl up by one of our native stone fireplaces with a great book. Or if you prefer, play board games by the
crackling fire, or simply listen to your favorite music as the snow falls just outside. These are just some of
