State Parks
The grand forested peaks and valleys of Maryland's Blue Ridge and Allegheny Mountains form an ancient
and rugged wonderland. With more than 120,000 acres of parks, forests, lakes and rivers, this is Maryland's
last frontier. Here visitors can enjoy downhill or cross country skiing in the winter and water skiing and
wind surfing in the summer. Relax in a canoe gliding on a golden pond. Bound a raft through some of the
finest whitewater available in the east. Hunting, fishing, and hiking are enjoyed year-round.
Big Run Park
With 300 acres in Garrett County, Big Run State Park offers rustic camping opportunities with 30 unimproved
campsites and a youth group camping area. Situated at the mouth of the Savage River Reservoir, the park is 16
miles from exit 24 of Interstate 68. The park is actually surrounded by the acreage of Savage River State Forest
and so visitors to the area have an even wider array of recreational opportunities with the facilities at all
of these public land sites in Western Maryland. With a boat launch, Big Run is a popular base camp for
outdoor-lovers intent on fishing, camping, hiking or hunting. Big Run is the trailhead for a 6-mile hiking
trail, known as Monroe Run. There is a rental picnic pavilion which can accommodate 100 people available by
reservation.

Deep Creek Lake Park
Nestled along the shores of Deep Creek Lake at Deep Creek Lake State Park, the Deep Creek Discovery Center is a
one-of-a-kind educational venue for people of all ages. Through hands-on exhibits that showcase the natural
resources of Western Maryland, families can learn about the flora and fauna, wildlife, cultural and historical
heritage that have turned this former logging and coal mining region into a popular modern day vacation
destination.

Herrington Manor Park
Located within Garrett State Forest in Garrett County, Herrington Manor State Park offers a 53-acre lake was formed
by damming Herrington Creek. Herrington Manor was designed as a state park in 1964, and encompasses 365 acres. The
park offers swimming, boating in rowboats, canoes and paddle boats, picnicking, hiking, tennis, volleyball and 20
furnished log cabins for rental use year round. Interpretive programs are scheduled during the summer; and popular
special events such as maple syrup demonstrations and apple butter making are held throughout the year.

New Germany Park
Popular for picnicking and camping, New Germany State Park lies within the boundaries of Savage River State
Forest. The 13-acre lake was formed when Poplar Lick Run was dammed for mill operation. This impoundment, known
as Swauger's Mill Dam, was named for mid-nineteenth century sawmill and gristmill builder, John Swauger.

Swallow Falls Park
This mountain park is located nine miles north of Oakland, Maryland contains some of Maryland's most breathtaking
scenery. The Youghiogheny River flows along the park's borders, passing through shaded rocky gorges and creating
rippling rapids. Muddy Creek Falls is a crashing 53-foot waterfall - a spectacular sight. Tall hemlocks dominate
the silent woods. The meandering trails through Swallow Falls guide hikers to some of the most breath-taking
scenery in Western Maryland.
